Take this information to the chipping practice area, or your back yard, and just get used to hitting down, forward, and through, the golf ball. Weight 60% on left side, small pendulum swing, strike the ball first, then take a small divot, keep the arms and hands moving forward. In just a few minutes you will be hitting the ball crisply and solidly. For slightly longer chip shots just increase the length of your pendulum swing.

Note: Do not use the hands!   By this I mean swing the "whole unit". The whole unit includes the shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, handle, shaft and clubhead. The whole unit moves "as one" therefore no flicking or intentional use of the wrists and hands please. This "whole unit pendulum" will never breakdown and is extremely consistent at returning the clubhead precisely back to the golf ball.

Once you start taking a consistent shaped divot (depth and line), irregular shaped divots will then tell you many things about your golf swing. This is of great help both when practicing and playing out on the golf course.

Here are some examples of divot patterns: These are general interpretations. There are a multitude of variables that can cause different divot patterns.

  1. No divot taken but hitting top half of the ball: - Body lifting "up' through impact (anticipating the hit) / Using a "scooping" action in trying to help lift the ball into the air / Left knee moving up and down (rather than across)

  2. Divot taken before striking the ball: - Weight staying on right side through impact / or a reverse pivot body action.

  3. Ball starts left of target and fades to the right, divot has small left to right shaping: - "Out to in" swing path.

  4. Ball starts right of target and draws to the left, divot has small right to left shaping: - "In to out" swing path.

  5. Divot very deep: - More severe up and down swing action used / probable body lunge at impact (another form of anticipating the hit).

  6. Ball lands left or right of the target, normal straight divot pattern: Incorrect body alignment at address.

Next time you watch golf on TV take a close look at the divots being taken. Nearly every shot includes a divot. Approach shots to the green, especially at the flagstick, will often produce extra large divots (as seen flying through the air) as a result of a fierce downward attack at the golf ball (below the equator) for extreme backspin. Think of the divot as part of your golf swing!

The emphasis in this lesson has been on iron play.  The Driver is used mainly from the tee box and therefore only used approximately 13 or 14 times during a typical round of golf. The irons are used a great deal more, so it makes sense to start hitting your irons solidly first, then move on to the Driver.

Also stopping the lesson at this stage will allow you to get completely familiar and comfortable with swinging the "whole unit" with 60% of your weight being favored on the left side.

The "set-up" for the Driver changes this weight preference. The 60%  now moves to the right side! More about that in the next lesson.

Summary:

  1. TRUST THE LOFT
  2. Address the ball and move 60% of your weight over to the left side.
  3. The "Bottom Dead Center" of the swing arc has now moved fractionally left (or forward ) of the golf ball.
  4. Arms and hands are now ahead of the golf ball, and stay that way through impact.
  5. Swing the "whole unit" (shoulders, arms, wrists, hands, handle, shaft and clubhead) in a pendulum type swing motion, down, forward and through, on a path to the target.

Start observing golfer's out on the golf course or on t.v. Whenever a bad shot is made, the participant has failed to execute all or part  of The #1 Principle for solid ball striking (Irons).
